Frequently asked questions

How lessons, puzzles, progress and teaching materials work.

Do I need an account?

No. Lessons and puzzles are available without an account. Progress can be saved on this device; an optional account lets you synchronise it across devices.

Where should a complete beginner start?

Start with the chessboard lesson, then learn the piece moves, check and checkmate, and special moves. The lesson list follows this order.

How do the exams work?

Each lesson has three questions worth ten points each. You pass with twenty points. Your best score continues to count when you practise again.

Why do I sometimes play Black?

Every puzzle names the side to move. The interactive board faces the side you play. Printed diagrams may be shown from White’s side, so always read the side-to-move label.

Can I practise my mistakes again?

The puzzle page offers “Review my mistakes” after you have missed a puzzle. Try the position again, read the explanation and check the opponent’s reply.

Are all bot levels available immediately?

You start with the first level. Passing lessons unlocks stronger levels. The bot page shows what you need to achieve next.

How do hints and advertisements work?

The first thinking hint for each puzzle move is free. Further guidance may use hint credits. Any rewarded advertisement requires a separate, clearly labelled choice. No advertisement loads when an advertising provider is unavailable.

How can I use Chessschool with a class?

Use the teacher library. Each plan lists prerequisites, materials, lesson phases and a worksheet with answers. There is no shared pupil dashboard.

Can I print the worksheets?

Yes. Choose the pupil sheet, the answer sheet or both. You can also save them as a PDF through your browser’s print window.

How do I report a mistake?

Use the contact form. Include the page address, the side to move, the position and the move you think is incorrect.

How do I switch language?

Choose English or Nederlands in the footer, or change Language in Settings. The site remembers your choice on this browser.
