How to practise: Mate in two

Find a first move that leads to checkmate on your second move despite the opponent’s defence. Calculate the reply before committing.

Check before you move

  1. Read the side-to-move label: you may play White or Black.
  2. Find your candidate move and the opponent’s strongest legal reply.
  3. Explain why the final position achieves the puzzle’s goal.

A common mistake

Do not calculate only your own moves: the opponent gets a turn in between.
