Lesson 13 of 13

Opposition and endgames

In king and pawn endgames the opposition decides: whoever has to give way with his king often loses the game.

Kings facing each other

If two kings stand on the same line with exactly one square between them, the player who is NOT to move has the opposition. Whoever is to move must step aside.

King and pawn

An active king and the opposition can help your pawn promote. Success depends on the position; watch key squares, rook pawns and stalemate.
