Lesson 1 of 13

The chessboard

Before you move a piece, you need to know the board. It is smaller than it looks.

Every square has an address

The board has 64 squares. The columns are called a to h, the rows 1 to 8. That way e4 always points to the same square.

How the army lines up

White is at the bottom and moves first. Both players have eight pawns on the second row on their side.
