When should you resign a chess game?

Resigning ends your game immediately. Beginners often learn more by checking whether the position is truly hopeless.

Study the piece placement and compare it with the explanation below. White to move.

Assess the whole position

Material is only one part of the position. Look at king safety, legal threats and possible stalemate or perpetual checking ideas before deciding. Being a queen down is serious, but does not prove forced checkmate.

Keep learning respectfully

Continue if you have a useful defensive idea or want to practise an ending. In friendly games, you can agree to discuss or restart. Avoid continuing solely to annoy the opponent.

Review afterwards

Whether you resign or play on, find the turning point and one possible improvement. Do not measure your progress by a single game. A lost game can reveal exactly what to practise next.
