Duck Chess rules – how the duck changes each move

A duck on the right square can shut down an entire attack.

Board diagram · Duck Chess
The duck on a4 sits between the white rook on a1 and the black king on a8.

How does this variant work?

Move a chess piece first, then place or relocate the duck on an empty square. Pieces cannot land on, capture or pass through the duck. A knight can jump over it. On Chess.com you win by capturing the enemy king or running out of legal moves yourself. Ordinary check and checkmate do not apply.

What should you look for in your first game?

Think about two squares each turn. Which line will the duck block in its new position? Which line will open when it leaves its old square?

Try it yourself

Can White capture the king on a8 with the rook now?

Show the answer

No. The duck blocks the a-file. You can move it only after playing a chess move.

An easy rule to overlook

Place the duck on an open line to shield your king for a turn. Your opponent moves it again after their piece move, so the cover is temporary. Check what they can already do on the first half of their turn.
