Doubled pawns and passed pawns

Pawn structure affects both your plans and the squares your pieces can use.

Doubled pawns

Two friendly pawns on the same file are doubled. They cannot defend each other directly and may be hard to advance. They are not automatically bad: an open file or active pieces can compensate.

Passed pawns

A passed pawn has no enemy pawn ahead of it on its file or either neighbouring file. It can still be stopped by the enemy king or pieces. Support it before pushing it towards promotion.

Choose a practical plan

Ask which king can reach the pawn first and whether advancing loses its protection. In many endings, an active king is more useful than an automatic pawn push.

Try it yourself

Does a passed pawn always promote?

Check the answer

No. Opposing pieces or the king can stop it. Calculate the race and support the pawn.
