Bughouse chess rules – team play on two boards
A knight you capture can save your partner’s king.
How does this variant work?
Four players form two teams. You play Black on one board and your partner plays White on the other, or vice versa. Captured enemy pieces go to your partner’s reserve. On their turn, they can drop one on an empty square. Pawns cannot be dropped on rank one or eight.
What should you look for in your first game?
On Chess.com the first decisive result on either board, such as mate or a timeout, settles the match. First practise passing a piece without clocks, then see how your partner can use it to block an attack.
Try it yourself
Name one empty square where the White teammate can drop the knight to block the check.
Show the answer
E2 is one option. The knight then stands between the rook and the king.
An easy rule to overlook
Your partner plays the other colour, so the captured piece already matches their side. A white knight that you capture as Black goes to your teammate’s White reserve. This is different from Crazyhouse.
