Antichess rules – win by losing your pieces

Your best move might invite your opponent to take your queen.

Board diagram · Antichess
White to move. The queen on d4 can reach the pawn on d6.

How does this variant work?

Capturing is compulsory when possible. If several captures exist, you choose one. There is no check or castling and the king can be captured. On Lichess you win by losing all your pieces or having no legal move on your turn.

What should you look for in your first game?

Start by finding your compulsory captures. Then ask what the opponent can take. If your move leaves them only one capture, you can choose which piece they take from you.

Try it yourself

May White move the queen to e4 to give it away later?

Show the answer

No. Qxd6 is available and is therefore compulsory.

An easy rule to overlook

Defending a piece can be inconvenient. If your opponent captures it, you may have to recapture. Look at the whole sequence of compulsory captures before trying to give a piece away.
